Raphael “Afutumix” Adjetey Adjei Mayne (born 1983, Accra, Ghana), studied painting (BA) at Ghanatta College of Art & Design in Accra, Ghana, just like his peers Amoako Boafo and Otis kwame kye Quiacoe.
HIs work is a visceral assemblage of diverse facets of Ghanaian and African sociocultural experiences evoking political, emotional & practically psychoanalytical connections and cut-aways weaving private & public space realities unbound by time.
The signed & stamped limited edition (50) is a print of Raphael’s original work “I, Kamala Harris”, 2021. 68.89 x 59.05in / 175 x 150cm, painted the day after her swearing in as the first female and also first Black Vice President.
These works are part of an ongoing body of work called FACELESS. It both is and it is not about the individual per say, whomever he portrays is a representation of Black people as a collective, thus inviting the Black viewer to easier imagine themselves being an Amanda Gorman (Raphael’s portrait of Amanda is in the permanent collection of Harvard University, HUTCHINS CENTER for AFRICAN & AFRICAN AMERICAN RESEARCH) or in this case Kamala Harris, or the girl in the pretty dress, etc., but also for the non-Black viewer to see our Blackness in general, rather than getting stuck focusing on the individual in the image the featureless face makes you think more about what the image signifies.
To many all they see is a person of color, they don’t see the individual. But also to us we know what we see. The imagery is symbolic, it’s about us as a whole. It’s a Black person that has been chosen to recite, it’s a Black person that’s being sworn in as VP, a Black person running for President.
"I leave the viewer to imagine who that person is or could be, and also to celebrate blackness in a very intensive series or way by painting in browns and black.
Detailing the face reduces my message I am sending out there that is my blackness."
